A blissful way to cool off on a hot day

Zalige verkoeling op een warme dag

Last year, we enjoyed a really long, hot summer, much to the delight of Kathleen, who likes nothing better than sitting in the sun with a cold drink. But what about Beauty, her lovely Sheltie, whose wagging tail is never far from Kathleen's side? How can she cool off in the heat? Kathleen makes sure that's taken care of.

"Beauty can't cool down by wearing summery clothes on a hot day", says worried Kathleen. "Shetland Sheepdogs - or Shelties, as they are known - have really thick coats, too. The breed originates from the Shetland Islands in Scotland, which is not exactly an area renowned for its tropical climate."

It can be dangerous for dogs to get too hot

The only way for dogs to lose heat is through the soles of their feet or by panting. "In the summer, when the weather gets very hot, it's really important that our faithful friend doesn't get too hot and risks overheating. If her body temperature gets too high, it can have serious consequences."

Lovely and cool

When the weather is hot, Kathleen makes sure that she only takes her dog out early in the morning or in the evenings. "And if it gets too hot, Beauty lies in the hallway to cool off. I put down a mat filled with self-cooling gel for her which helps her to stay nice and cool. It's also ideal for her to lie on in the car while I am doing the shopping. I always leave the car
